Job Description

A growing construction company in the Baltimore County area seeks a qualified Payroll Specialist

Key Responsibilities

Payroll Processing

  • Process weekly or bi-weekly payroll for field and office staff
  • Maintain accurate employee records, timecards, and hours worked
  • Verify overtime calculations, shift differentials, per diem, and prevailing wage rates
  • Enter and audit timesheets from job sites and supervisors
  • Track PTO, sick time, holiday pay, and leave programs

Construction-Specific Requirements

  • Prepare and submit certified payroll reports (Davis-Bacon, state prevailing wage)
  • Calculate job-costed labor and allocate payroll expenses to projects
  • Process union payroll, including dues, benefits, and reporting (if applicable)
  • Maintain compliance with multi-state payroll laws for traveling crews
  • Manage garnishments, deductions, reimbursements, and fringe benefits

Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure accuracy with federal, state, and local payroll regulations
  • Prepare payroll reports for project managers, accounting, and leadership
  • Reconcile payroll accounts and support month-end close
  • Respond to payroll-related audits and government inquiries

Employee Support

  • Serve as primary contact for payroll questions
  • Assist with onboarding new hires, setting up tax forms, and updating records
  • Coordinate with HR on benefits, workers' compensation, and employee changes

Systems & Tools

  • Use payroll and construction accounting software such as Viewpoint, Sage 300 CRE, CMiC, Foundation, or ADP
  • Maintain digital payroll records, reports, and employee files

Qualifications

  • 2-5+ years payroll experience; construction payroll strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of prevailing wage, certified payroll, and job costing
  • Experience with payroll systems common in construction
  • Strong understanding of federal and state wage laws
  • High attention to detail, accuracy, and confidentiality
  • Strong Excel and data entry skills
  • Ability to meet strict weekly deadlines in a fast-paced environment
